The Archives contains two collections: UCCS Archives and the Beth-El Historical Collections

UCCS Archives

Scope of the Collections

The collections of the UCCS Archives consist of materials generated by offices, organizations and individuals important to the development of the Colorado Springs campus. These collections contain primary source material, including correspondence, reports, photographs, publications, scrapbooks, audio-visual recordings, press clippings and printed ephemera. The collections exist to support, supplement, and complement programs of research, education, and scholarship on the UCCS campus.

Description of the Collections

As part of an on-going process, descriptions of the UCCS Archives are being added to the Kraemer Family Library catalog so they can be discovered with other relevant, published works. Finding aids with descriptions are available for all processed collections in the UCCS University Archives.

Beth-El Historical Collections

The Beth-El Historical Collections document the history of the Beth-El School of Nursing/College of Nursing and Health Sciences and the nursing profession in the twentieth century. Materials include documents, images, book, instructional materials, and artifacts that were collected and donated by the members of Beth-El Alumni Nurses Association, faculty members, and administrators of the School, later College. The Collections also contain records and artifacts maintained within the College.

The Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences began as a nurse training program in the hospital established in Colorado Springs in 1904. Initially, the service-oriented training staffed the hospital with student nurses. Nursing education evolved with the standardization and specialization in nursing and health care fields. The Historical Collections attempt to answer the very simple and very difficult question, “What did nurses do?” Changes in medical knowledge, practices, and technology have greatly impacted health care and health sciences education and the professions. The field and the curriculum of the College have expanded to include wide-ranging aspects of health care and health promotion.

Information and materials on the following institutions are included in the Beth-El Historical Collections: Colorado Conference Deaconess Hospital and Nurse Training Program (1904-1911), Beth-El Hospital (1911-1943), the Beth-El School of Nursing (1911-1985), Memorial Hospital (1943-1997), Beth-El College of Nursing (1985-1995), and Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences (City-owned College, 1995-1997; College of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, 1997-2015).

The Beth-El Historical Collections may be accessed through the UCCS University Archives. Please contact the Archives Librarian to arrange access – at least one day’s notice is required to retrieve materials in remote storage. Unprocessed collections are available to on-campus researchers only and restricted collections (those containing personally identifiable information and student academic records) require authorization to access.
